歐洲葡萄牙語與巴西葡萄牙語在一個字上分道揚鑣：tu 對 você。片段裡，一位歐葡說話者模仿巴西說法 “tua mãe deixa?”（「你媽媽讓你嗎？」），用 tua（非正式「你的」）搭配巴西式介係詞 na，而非歐葡的 à。標準歐葡會說 “a tua mãe deixa-te?”，附著式代詞 te 夾在動詞後，介係詞也不同。
這個分野是葡語使用者跨大西洋互認身分最快的線索。巴西葡語大幅簡化了歐葡的介係詞系統；歐葡保留了巴西葡語多已捨棄的附著式代詞。「葡萄牙語」其實是共用一個名稱的兩套語法。
