「zeg maar」在荷蘭文裡是什麼意思？

Zeg maar is the trickiest member of the imperative-plus-maar family because it has two distinct lives. As a literal imperative, zeg maar means "go ahead, say it" — an invitation to a hesitant speaker. But more often, in spoken Dutch, zeg maar is a filler phrase that operates like English "kind of," "let's say," or "you know" — a hedge the speaker drops mid-sentence to soften a definition or approximation.

A Dutch person describing their job to a foreigner might say "Ik werk in marketing, zeg maar" — the zeg maar signals "I'm simplifying, the real answer is more complex." A Dutch teen describing a friendship as "hij is mijn beste vriend, zeg maar" is hedging slightly. The phrase appears mid-sentence or sentence-final and has become so frequent that it's joined the small set of "Dutch verbal tics" foreigners notice immediately.

The two uses don't conflict in practice because tone and position disambiguate. Sentence-initial zeg maar with rising intonation is the imperative; sentence-medial or final zeg maar with a downbeat is the filler.
